Introducing: Homemade with the Beekeeper’s Wife

18 Jan
Hey all … I’m really excited about a series of guest posts starting today from my friend the Beekeeper’s Wife … she’s a good friend and an amazing mummy, and she knows ridiculously much about doing stuff for yourself and your kiddleys – I’m uber-excited to present … the Beekeeper’s Wife!

Homemade encapsulates so much I love … good, real food … and of course, making our own fabulous homemade toys, and therein teaching our chilluns creativity, self-sufficiency, skills to make things!
And in doing all this homemade stuff, surely we are doing that all important thing of the noughties, reducing our carbon footprint and striving to live ‘sustainably’. I’ll be the first to admit I have smug factor 100!
Daisy wrote a great post a while back about how appallingly consumerist we are now compared to say, our grandparents’ generation. Or Hungarians.
I couldn’t agree more. I took philosophy at uni (aren’t I clever!), and one of the huge things I’m aware of as a parent is how culturally constructed our reality is – we assume we’re supposed to live how the mainstream does, when in fact 50 years ago our grandparents didn’t need half the crap we have and actually took responsibility for their lives.
I’m no earth mother. Wait, hang on – I haven’t shaved my armpits in more than a decade (why on earth would you want to look like a plucked chicken, when you could emit all those beautiful natural pheromones!).
I only own a handful of shoes, primarily, my Feelgoodz jandals (smug!),  and the soul boots I bought in 7th form – 7th form! I confess I’ve weed into an ice-cream container to add to the compost. (I used to let it mellow if it was yellow, before I realised all my water saving wasn’t much good when RR goes and wastes litres playing with the hose! You should come and live in the mountains, Zelda, we’ve got buckets of water!).
I didn’t have a lotus birth or eat my babies’ placentas, and I sure as hell wasn’t going to tandem feed, but I did breastfeed RR til he was about 21 months, and I was 5 months pregnant with the Beebee. Yes I’m guilty of judging bottle feeders too (not any more!). Maybe I am an earthmother!
I should get off the computer and go and make some stinging nettle soup or something.
I’ll be back!
