Update on the giving up coffee situation:
Ok so I’ve been working reeeeeally hard recently.
And I can’t work without coffee!
I’ve tried.
My mum, bless her heart, is sending some Rooibos tea (which is caffeine-free and very good for you) to me from the other side of the world. Freshpak, the real South African deal (I know it’s authentic coz this colourful box is a mainstay in Lize’s kitchen):
‘Feels so good’.
Just not QUITE as good as caffeine. Sigh.
Here’s the plan: I’ll be guilted into mainlining rooibos tea instead of the feine through the horrendous thought of the food miles those teabags have travelled to get to me, as follows:
- From growers to exporters in South Africa;
- From South Africa to New Zealand by plane;
- From an importer in Auckland to Napier Pak n’ Save by truck;
- From Napier Pak n’ Save to the little beach community half an hour north of there where Mum and Dad live, by car;
- From their place back to Napier to be posted, by car;
- From Napier to our little village in Hungary, by van, plane, van;
- From the village post office to our house, in the capable hands of the world’s loveliest postie (me, accepting package: ‘Thank you’; she: ‘Oh you’re VERY welcome!’), by bike.
Guilt: one of the most effective tools available to womankind for getting shit done. Right?
Daisy

I would do this for tea, no guilt. In fact, I do. PG tips, from Countdown Crofton downs, via Auckland, UK, shipping from wherever in India. NO GUILT Daisy. Not for tea.
I do feel guilt however, when buying a birthday card, printed in the UK, here in Welly, sending it back to the UK. What is the point of that. Damn you Edward Monkton and your lovely funny cards.
hee hee! It’s actually such a common situation. Modern life is so frequently bizarre (and guilt-inducing).
Life’s short and coffee is glorious. A calorie-less elixir that tastes devine, gives cheer and is also a legal stimulant? It’s too good to be true. Do you really want to be queuing for the pearly gates with nothing to show for your toil but a slow wit and an empty box of red bush?
oh God, you’re so fricken convincing! this is not good. I put my whole tortuous journey out there in the public sphere hoping to rub together a little bit of moral support for my suffering and all i get is people telling me to Drink More Coffee. Sigh. *heads resignedly towards coffee machine*
